Wintersville is a large village situated in the center of
Jefferson County. It covers an area consisting of a little
more than six square miles with a population of 3,924 as
reported in the 2010 U.S. Census. The village is
residential/suburban in nature and is governed by a Mayor and
Village Council elected by non-partisan ballot.
The
major transportation routes located within the Village are
U.S. Route 22 and Ohio State Route 43, with Ohio Route 646
entering the Village at the north corporate limits. Ohio State
Route 7 and the Ohio River are approximately seven miles away
using U.S. Route 22. A five-lane highway consisting of two
eastbound lanes, two westbound lanes, and a turning lane
provides safe and efficient traffic flow for motorists. This
highway system provides rapid access to Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, which is 47 miles to the east; Wheeling, West
Virginia, which is 29 miles to the south; Columbus, Ohio,
which is 150 miles to the west; and Cleveland, Ohio, which is
115 miles to the north.
In addition to an excellent
highway system, Wintersville is strategically located 30 miles
from the Greater Pittsburgh International Airport, 20 miles
from the Wheeling-Ohio County Airport, and abuts the Jefferson
County Airport on its south corporate line. River and rail
transportation are available along the Ohio River.
The
County seat is situated in Steubenville, Ohio, which directly
abuts the Village's east corporation line. Jefferson County is
comprised of 411 square miles and contains two cities and 17
villages with a total population of 73,894 residents. The
major employers in the county are industrial based and include
facilities owned by Timet Corporation, American Electric Power
Company and Ohio Edison Company. Weirton Steel Corporation is
located approximately 9 miles away in Weirton, West Virginia.
Recreation is plentiful in Jefferson County. Jefferson
State Park, Fernwood State Forest, and Friendship Park,
location of the annual Jefferson County Fair, provide
beautiful settings for outdoor recreation. Municipal park
systems with public swimming pools and ball fields are nearby
and playgrounds are located in many of the Village's
subdivisions. The Village is currently making plans for a
multifunctional recreation complex to be located on thirteen
acres of land that lays adjacent to the Municipal Building.
Numerous golf courses are available throughout the County
and within a four-mile radius of Wintersville there are
private country clubs. The Ohio River offers marinas and boat
landings for water activities such as boating and skiing. The
children of Wintersville are educated in the jurisdiction of
the Indian Creek School District, which is comprised of
students from the communities of Mingo Junction, Bloomingdale,
and Wintersville. In the neighboring community of Belvedere,
students from all of Jefferson County who desire a vocational
education attend the Jefferson County Joint Vocation School.
For those students who plan to attend college, two
institutions of higher education are located within a
four-mile radius of Wintersville. Eastern Gateway Community
College, which is fully accredited by the North Central
Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, offers a
two-year associates degree in many technical studies. The
Franciscan University of Steubenville offers both bachelor's
degrees and masters' degrees with courses of study in the arts
and sciences.
Health care facilities abound in the
local area. Trinity Health Systems
provides two campuses (East and West) that provide full
service health care and 24-hour emergency care at the West
facility.
The Village contracts with the Wintersville
Volunteer Fire Department to provide both fire and emergency
medical services to its residents.
The Wintersville
Police Department provides round the clock police services to
our residents. The department consists of both full time staff
and part-time auxiliary officers. In addition to the
Wintersville Police Department, the Jefferson County Sheriff's
Department services the residents of the Village and a Post of
the Ohio State Highway Patrol is located less than 1 mile west
of the municipality.
The Village administers its own
modern water and sewage systems and has its own full service
sanitation department.
After a hard day's work or
schooling, or a fun day of recreation, the residents of the
Village return to a safe and relaxing atmosphere.
